Navigating the Labor Market in Strange Times
The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in an acute employment crisis, characterized by high unemployment, low labor force participation, general uncertainty, and innovative leaps. Less than 3 years later, we are now in an environment characterized by labor shortages, low unemployment and inflation. This presentation uses data to tell the story of how we moved from one crisis to another in a short period of time and gives us clues on what we might expect to see in the future.
Anneliese Vance-Sherman is a regional labor economist with the Washington State Employment Security Department, a position she has held since February 2010. Her region includes King, Snohomish, Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan Counties. Anneliese works closely with economic and workforce development partners, media, businesses and others throughout the North and Central Puget Sound region and statewide, providing local labor market intelligence to help inform strategic decision-making.
Anneliese holds a Ph.D. in Economic Geography and a Master’s degree in Applied Economics, both from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
